Update on Pinterest Followers

I have good pleasure in announcing that since I last updated you, I have gained 5 new Pinterest followers, currently totaling to 285.  There are still 10 more full days in 2016, so I'm anticipating reaching my goal of 300 followers before the year ends.  Let's do it!

It's Winter!

It's officially winter!  December 21, 2016 is our first full day of winter this year.  We only have 10 more days to get through until 2017 welcomes us, but we should get through Christmas first!  In my area we've already gotten snow three times; it hasn't lasted but we've still gotten it.  I'm looking forward to a nice, cold, snowy winter!

One of My Favorite Topics - Real Estate!

Hello fanatics of Life's Incredible Wonders!  Before I get to the real point of this post, I just want to say a big thank you to all of you who have viewed this blog in the past year.  When I signed in just now, I had 2,693 page views!  What would make me even gladder is if I got to 3,000 by my 15th birthday (2/6/17) and maybe even gain another follower or two.  And as always, I know this blog can often fall into a state of inactivity, so please, if you have any ideas on what I should start posting, please send me a message via the contact form you will see displayed on the right margin of this page.

And now to this post's target - real estate.  Let me just start off by saying that I've been obsessed with the topic of real estate for nearly 2 years.  It all began when I somehow noticed our old house, which we sold in 2009, was once again on the market.  I decided to scroll through the pictures and see how many changes had been done since we moved out (I began to wonder if it was the same house!  While the new owner only painted it looked like, it looked a lot different).  A few days later, I decided to look up the house again, and then after I had scrolled through the pictures again, I noticed some nearby listings on the screen.  So, I decided to look at those.  Before long, I was browsing listings in other towns. I began to look at new listings a few times a week.

Today, I browse Zillow for new listings in my town and a few others each and every day, probably multiple times.  Many days that's one of the first things I do when I wake up in the morning.  I normally look at seven main towns or cities in my state, but I also branch out sometimes.  I even look in other states!  Any good-looking home with great curb appeal most likely has my attention, any good-looking home $500,000 or more has my attention, and any home $1 million or over definitely has my attention.  I say this not because I'm jealous of other people's houses (although, I admit, sometimes I probably am), but because I am a lover of fine houses, so I like to look at ones in my area.  However, the only type of property I really look at are houses.  I have very little interest in vacant lots, total rehabilitations, or commercial properties.  The only other types I look at would be condominiums and apartments, and I like even many of those.  I've looked at real estate so much that I could walk up to pretty much anyone I know and tell them exactly how many square feet are in their home, how many bedrooms they have, or the size of their lot!  I also like a few particular real estate shows, some of which involve renovation.

So, even if you have no particular interest in real estate, you may enjoy browsing new listings in your area.  If you like interior design, looking at pictures of new listings is a way you'd get to see how other people's homes are decorated.  It may sound creepy, but it's actually quite fun!

I'm Homeschooled: What Will My Public Schooled Peers Think?

"You homeshoolers have it way easier than we do!"
"What makes you think so?"
"You don't have to sit in class all day with like 30 other students."
"No, but school itself isn't much easier."
"Your teachers aren't as strict as ours."
"No, my teacher isn't strict, but we still have to do schoolwork."
"Why do parents even homeschool their kids?"

And the debate went on and on and on for several minutes.

That was an excerpt from a recent minor debate at my church's youth group between a public schooled student and a homeschooled one.  It's not word for word, but very similar to what was being said.  I was not involved in this debate, rather just a bystander.  But I was listening in as I wanted to hear what kind of criticism we homeschoolers would continue to receive.  There are at least ten homeschooled teenagers in my youth group, and I wanted to hear what was being said about us.  The last thing I heard from the debate was, "Why do parents even homeschool their kids?"  Let me tell you how that jolted me right back into reality.  I would've definitely spoken up, but then one of the youth group leaders came and announced that we were heading to another building on our campus.  But if we had stayed there a minute later, yes, I would have said my piece.

There are many benefits and advantages a homeschooled student gets with their education.  For instance, school doesn't necessarily start at 7am, recesses or breaks can be longer, students have their teacher's undivided attention, and just get to stay home and relax.  But, there's sometimes a disadvantage: if you're homeschooled but some of your peers and friends aren't.

I've been homeschooled since I started school in 2006; I'm now in 10th grade.  I've had no experience in the public school at all, except sitting in the hallway several years back when my sister used to go for speech therapy.  I've been homeschooled since day one.  Had it been different, I don't think I would have ever conquered my difficulties in certain subjects, and my life would be totally different.  I am grateful and will forever be that I am able to be taught by my mother, in a clean environment, free of all the bullying, drinking, etc. that happens in public school.  With the temperaments I have I don't think I'd last long being taught away from my home.  I recall on December 14, 2012 I was especially glad to be homeschooled, as a murderer shot 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.  Had I been a survivor of that incident, I don't think I'd want to go back to school, ever, because I'm sure the experience was traumatizing and still is for the survivors.  I would not like waking up, getting ready and going to school each morning knowing that something like that may happen.  With the world we're living in, you just never know.

I'm also grateful to be homeschooled because of my beliefs.  I'm a Christian, and if I was public schooled I would probably be a target of bullying or the other evils that go on in public schools, just to test my belief.  That's what happens these days, from what I hear.

So, if you happen to be homeschooled and your peers or friends are making fun of you or questioning your family's decision, just remember that it's what your family has chosen and that's the method of schooling you'll be sticking to.  Now, who can question that?

Pinterest

Hi folks!  Before I get started on the real point of this post, I just wanted to let you know that I've officially been blogging for a year!  Last Tuesday, November 8, was this blog's one-year anniversary.  Thank you all so much for reading my blog and I hope you've been enjoying the material I've been sharing with you.

Now to this post's target - Pinterest.  No, this isn't a post describing this fun and creative app, as I've done multiple times in the past, but I'm referring more to my own profile right now.  I've been on Pinterest for about a year and a half, and do not regret setting up an account.  I have over 30 boards filled with thousands of ideas of various topics.  I have recipes, writing tips, funny stuff and more!  Nearly every day new ideas are added to my page.  So if you're on Pinterest, please consider checking out my profile (I will post the link below*).  If you're not on Pinterest, you won't get to see my profile unless you sign up.  My goal is to get to 300 followers by the end of 2016; I currently have 258 (I don't care who follows me - just a fun goal).  I also follow some people back!  However, if you follow me, please keep something in mind - I have had to block several people because they've followed me and their profile pictures have featured partial nudity - so if you follow me your profile picture, if you have one, is to be appropriate if you expect me not to block you.  I don't care what your pins are - your profile picture is all I'm concerned about.  If your picture is appropriate, I will accept you as a follower.

Thank you all for reading, and please watch for more updates on this blog soon!

Be Careful With The Internet!

Hi all you readers out there!  After another 2-month state of inactivity - ugh! - I'm back on this blog again!  If you check out my other blogs sometime soon, I'll probably be updating those later on.  I hope you've all been doing well and it's really good to be back online.  It's been a bit busier for me with school starting up a couple of months ago - I'm in 10th grade this year so the workload isn't as light as it used to be.  I also have youth group to attend on Thursdays and serve in our church's AWANA program (a youth group for kids age 3-6th grade) program.  So it's been a bit busier, but not entirely too busy.  So I hope that I'll be able to visit and post here often!

This post was intended to be more serious, though.  All of you that read this blog use the Internet.  I know that because if you didn't use it, there would be no way to access this page.  Being online can be very useful and convenient for you, and it also serves as a way to pass time.  But, it can also be bad as well (I will be focusing primarily on social media).

Today we're living in the age of technology and where we have anything we want at the push of a button.  I'm not saying that being on social media is bad, as long as it's handled correctly.  Yesterday I was on one of my favorite apps, Pinterest.  There are topics and people that you can follow to get creative ideas.  Topics on Pinterest usually have a photo displaying the kind of content in that topic, and they change the photo from time to time.  I followed one particular topic that I thought to be ABSOLUTELY harmless, yet when I got on last night there was a very inappropriate photo on that topic, so what I did was unfollow it.  Things come into my home feed that I don't like, and I don't know where they come from.  I've been considering taking down my account or at least unfollowing most if not all of my following (if you're not on Pinterest you won't understand what I'm talking about).  Something came into my feed the other day that I thought was just a funny joke, but when I started reading it aloud, my mother said that it was mentioning drugs.  I didn't know that because it didn't mention the word "drugs" directly and I would only have known what it meant if it mentioned drugs directly.  There was no profane language in it at all, so I thought it was perfectly all right.  What happened is I had also shared this thing on Facebook, so I rushed my fastest to delete it before any of my friends saw it.  Thankfully, only one had, to my knowledge.

And another example is YouTube.  No, I do not have a YouTube account and wouldn't really be able to use one, but sometimes I still look things up like funny animal videos (haha!).  Even those I watch without the sound because I don't want to risk listening to bad language if there's any in the video.  That is one site on which you could probably find any video you wanted, whether good or bad.  You can also use the Internet illegally, which will REALLY get you into trouble.

Several members of my house have stumbled upon inappropriate content accidentally, and it's happened too many times.  That's why that on most of our computers, we have a program called K9 Web Protection, that blocks much of the inappropriate content that's out there.  What my point comes down to - don't ever mess around or use the Internet undiscerningly.  If you allow yourself to go see anything online, you will regret your carelessness sooner or later.  What you see will be planted into your memory, sometimes forever, depending on the extremity of it.  In this world of technology, there's nothing wrong with using the Internet, but we must use it carefully.  We will all be better off if we don't underestimate the World of the Web.

"The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." - Luke 6:45

School's About to Begin!

This past summer flew by so quickly!  We start our homeschool year on Wednesday, and I'm going into the 10th grade!  I look forward mostly to adding a "cousin" to our school, in addition to my sister and me.  The courses I'll be doing this year are French, Government, Biology, Spelling & Vocabulary, Creative Writing and Algebra 2.  I believe that our literature and geography go along with other subjects.  One of my favorite avocations is writing, so I thought I'd take a Creative Writing course this year to enhance my ability and interest in writing in case this hobby could see a future career for me.

I may be posting more about the school year in the near future, so stay tuned for more updated on It's All About Jesus!

I'm Back!

Okay, it's been a month.  My last post was published on 7/23.  I've been inactive for a month, however, this time I did not have a wedding going on and a family in town so I had no excuse for being inactive for this long.  However, I just did a bit of work on my Blogger account so I intend to stay active (maybe this time I'll stay true to that resolution!).  As you know I've changed the name of the blog, but don't worry, I won't always be preaching about the Gospel.  As a Christian, Jesus Christ is the center of my life, and I blog about my life and such, so I thought that this new name was quite fitting.  I hope to be posting 2 or 3 times a week if not more, so please check this site frequently for updates.  Thanks for reading!

Bible Verses to Live By

These are some Bible verses I love and think are great to live by.  We live in a world of danger and turmoil and life for the Christian is not supposed to be easy.  We need encouragement in these trying times and these verses I find to be very encouraging.  May we continue to press on toward our goal, our sole purpose - to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (from the Westminster Catechism).  I hope you find these verses encouraging and great to remember as we go through with our daily lives.

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and My Redeemer." - Psalm 19:14

"My grace is sufficient for you, for My Power is made perfect in weakness." - 2 Corinthians 12:9

"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice." - Proverbs 12:15

"Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." - Hebrews 4:16

"Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart." - Proverbs 3:3

"You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men." - 1 Corinthians 7:23

"Be still, and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10

"Restore me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit." - Psalm 51:12

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths." - Proverbs 3:5-6

App Reviews

Hi!  Today I'm going to be sharing some of my own reviews for the apps and social media platforms I have.  I got this idea from my friend BloggerA, whose blog you may view at imagination16.blogspot.com.

Facebook.  I got Facebook about a month ago.  In case you don't know, Facebook is a social media that allows you to post things and chat with your friends.  You get friends on Facebook by searching for someone you know in the search bar (AFTER you set up an account, of course) and click on them.  It will say near the top of that person's page "Add Friend" which will send them a friend request.  And if they accept, there you go!  You also get to select your own personal profile and cover photos, which will make your account personal.  You can also customize who sees your profiles and posts.  If you don't have a Facebook account already, I highly recommend getting one!

Pinterest.  Pinterest is an extraordinarily fun social media, app, whatever you want to call it.  It allows you to collect things you like onto boards that you create.  You get to choose your own profile picture and write a paragraph of up to 160 characters about yourself.  You can also follow people you know who have Pinterest.  You can also follow topics and single boards.  Pinterest is very fun, creative, excellent and convenient!

Skype.  Skype is a social media which involves a WebCam (a WebCam is a camera that attaches to your computer and allows you to video call.  Many electronic devices have these built in.  Skype is a social media that allows you to video call people near and far, but you can only call people in your contacts, of course.  You can also just chat regularly with your friends by typing to chat.  I use it mainly to chat with missionary friends in Senegal.  Skype is excellent in so many ways!

Pandora.  Pandora is a music app that allows you to, of course, listen to music online.  You make an account and then begin to create albums.  You can select your favorite genres and artists and make albums out of them.  When you listen to an album that you've made, it will play songs from several different artists but it will all be the same genre.

Tidido.  Tidido is like Pandora, in that it plays online music.  On Tidido, after you make an account, you search for one of your favorite artists in the search box.  Not only can you listen to just one of their songs online, but their entire albums as well!

Grammarly.  Grammarly is a wonderful grammar app that you install in your web browser.  For browsers I use Mozilla Firefox and Internet explorer - I have installed Grammarly in Firefox.  The whole purpose of this app is to catch errors you type while writing something online.  When you're writing any place on the Internet, Grammarly will automatically catch any errors you make online.  I am using Grammarly the very minute this is being typed.

Evernote.  I first discovered Evernote when a friend told me about it.  It's an writing app which requires you to make an account before you begin anything.  After you've joined, you can write things, save and edit them on this wonderful app.  I don't use it very often, but I highly recommend it for professional writers or those who enjoy writing.

Blogger.  Blogger (also called Blogspot) is the platform on which you are reading this blog right now.  For those of you who don't have an account, the whole purpose is to write posts and share them with the world.  If you've been wanting to start a blog but haven't yet, I highly recommend Blogger!

I believe that's all for the social medias and apps.  Please note that these were intended to be brief descriptions and that I am not posting tutorials on how to use these things.  These networks are all free.  If you think I should post more or less about one of these certain networks, please comment on this post or send me a message via the contact form. Thank you!

The Events of June 10

Not very much happened on June 10, other than my cousin got married!  Yes, she got married to the Applebee's guy who had to direct me out of Applebee's kitchen in March.  So anyway, it was a great wedding in a great church.  My cousin's sister (also my cousin, lol) was the maid of honor which was probably really exciting for her.  The wedding party was large, which was nice.  Even though there were sirens going by just about the while ceremony, the important thing is that it was centered around God.  We also enjoyed seeing my aunt, uncle and cousins who had come from Wisconsin for the wedding.  It was a family week for sure!

The reception was at a very nice country club.  They served great food and were great hosts, which honored the occasion even more.  I loved having a family picture taken with the bride and groom; my grandparents; my aunts, uncles and cousins and my household family.  After that there was dancing (including the first dance) and the wedding cake.  We left the country club at 11pm, I imagine well before the celebration ended.  The whole thing was great, and I loved it.

Now the newlyweds are on their way to Ohio to find an apartment.  My cousin will be attending vet school there hopefully next year, so they want to get settled and stuff before she begins that.  If they find an apartment they will probably move in as soon as they can.  I hear that Ohio residents have a much better chance of getting into this college than out-of-state residents, so this way they should be considered Ohio residents.

Congratulations my cousins!  I hope you enjoy what is to come as a married couple!

Welcome Back, You Inactive Blogger!

I'm back after I took a break from blogging for over a month!  My last post was published on May 27; it is now July 5.  A lot happened in the past month, which is basically why I've been gone for so long.  My cousin got married (first one to on my mom's side of the family) in the first full week of June.  At the same time my uncle on my dad's side was visiting for other purposes, and he left on June 17.  My father turned 50 last Monday and we had a small surprise luncheon party for him the day after.  My sister and I have been busy volunteering with setting up a Vacation Bible School program at our church (which will take place later this month).  I have also been keeping myself busy with Facebook and Pinterest, but now I'm back to blogging as well.

So those are the major events that took place since I last touched base over this blog.  I'll try to blog more often, but I can't guarantee it.  Sometimes I forget I even have a blog (or four!).  But I will try to share things with my readers more often!  Bye!

Finger to Fire

I know I haven't blogged in almost a month, so I decided that I would share with you a random story of today.

Today I was making our lunch, Shepherd's Pie, while my mom was running some checks at the church office (for those of you who are wondering why I'm home during the day, I'm homeschooled).  Anyway, I had asked my sister to make the instant mashed potato topping for the pie while I finished up the rest of the meal.  I was standing at the sink where I had set down my recipe card while turning to make sure I had turned the off the burner on which I had the meal cooking.  I should not have turned because instead of putting my hand down on the edge of the sink, I set my hand nicely on the burner on which my sister had JUST cooked the instant mashed potato; so, you know, it was still really hot!  Thankfully the sink is right next to the stove so I was able to run the burn under cold water right away.  Immediately after rinsing it, I grabbed an ice pack out of the freezer and basically held it to my hand for an hour or so as it was quite sore.  It's only a small first-degree burn on my finger but it was a feisty little thing, for the first minute or so I felt like my finger was on fire.  It's fine now and will heal quickly.

Also, if you read any of my other blogs, please feel free to visit them as I have posted quite recently on all of them.  Just click on my profile and you will get the links.  Have a great night, and I hope to post again soon!

The Online Cookbook Update

So you may or may not know that in early 2016 I set up another blog for posting recipes, The Online Cookbook.  Lately it's been very inactive, but just yesterday I started posting tons of new recipes.  So if you want some good recipe ideas, why don't you go look at my other blog at theonlinecookbook479.blogspot.com?

My April Timeline

Where has one-third of 2016 gone?!  I can hardly believe it's been almost four months since the beginning of the year and three weeks since I've posted anything.  Here's a bit of what's happened since you've last heard from me -

The day after my last post, I spent almost 3 evening hours in the emergency room.  A family member fell victim to a moderate injury which required attention.  For this person's sake I will give no other details and ask my friends who read this blog not to expose the information.  We went in at about 9pm, 45 minutes after the incident and were on our way home only 15 minutes shy of midnight.  I finally got to bed at 12:45am, waking at 8:30.  The injured one had a doctor's appointment for one of the 2 injuries resulting from the last night's incident.  The doctor, a friend of my mother's, was able to squeeze us in and although we had to wait awhile we were thankful that there was a bit of time available.  That day was quite snowy, and all of the way I was thinking we were going to get slammed any minute - after the car in front of us on one road slowed down to go up a slippery hill and if that driver had slowed down any more he would've backed straight into us (sorry for the run-on sentence!).  I had the option to stay home from the emergency room so I can't rightfully complain about that.

The next Monday, April 11, my sister and I had the pleasure of babysitting 2 young toddlers who cling to us like glue!  One's mother had had a baby in mid-March so our gift to them was free-babysitting their now-21-month-old daughter.  This family goes to our church and their daughter can pick us out in the crowd...which is why we offered this deal to them (apart from the parsonage, which is on a different property and not owned by the church, there are 2 houses on our church's property which are occupied by my family and the 21-month-old's family). The other toddler just turned 2 years old and is "obsessed" with trains, balls, moons, etc. - a typical little boy.  We are great friends with his family and him, of course (despite me being 12 years older than him).  And yes, I am calling them "the toddlers" because I will not give out any names (okay, I gave out my cousin's fiance's a few weeks ago but there are a lot of people named Dan in the world).

Last Saturday my friend turned 13!  Although I am not the birthday person, I wish our two families another year (no, eternity) of friendship!

This past Monday, April 18, I roasted my second chicken.  Seeing me holding a raw whole chicken is NOT a dull sight.  I kind of freak out that I am basically holding the dead bird with its head and feathers missing (I could've sworn I saw my first chicken, which I roasted in February, breathe as I put it in the roasting pan!).  And yes, you have to pick the bird up to prepare it for roasting so don't think I was just holding it for the fun of it.  At the beginning of the process let me just say that the chicken dripped all over the kitchen floor.  After that mess was cleaned up and I filled the bird with water to rinse it, it was roasted.  It made a delicious meal!  We also babysat the female toddler again!

This Tuesday, April 19, we babysat the other toddler.  Watching him crash and knock his trains off of the tracks was comical and as usual I loved the time.  He even crashed the ride-on cars at our church's playground and flipped them over.

Two days ago, on April 21, we went to the zoo with an honorary grandma, aunt and cousin.  My mom is potentially homeschooling this "cousin" next year and we hadn't seen each other to speak of in a long time so we wanted to get "reacquainted."

Yesterday, April 22, my mom went to drop something off at our church and was welcomed by a bat!  After it crashed into her, it flew laps around the lobby until my mom made a mad dash back out the door (she has to turn the alarm off first but didn't bother resetting it).  Her heart was pounding for a while afterward from the scare and had to wait to leave the church because she was still shaking!

Today, April 23, we will potentially be starting to get the ground ready to plant our first garden!  After using a neat technique to plant vegetables ahead of time and then transfer them into the ground, we're only a month away from getting these plants into the ground!  Sadly some of our plants blew over in a recent windy night and are not showing signs of growth, so we think they may be damaged.  However, some of our other plants are flourishing healthily, especially the lettuce.  Not bad considering we're first-time gardeners.  Today is also the 7-year anniversary of when my family moved into our current home.  I have officially spent half of my lifetime at each of the 2 houses I've lived in.  I confess memories of our old house are fading from my memory but I'm surprised that I've remembered those things for this long.  I thank God for the home we have now because we did not just move out of the old house just because we were running out of room or wanted to live somewhere else.

My dad has also decided he's now a blog reader and frequently (this should be boldface, underlined, italicized and capitalized) reads my blog, my sister's and my friends'.  Not that I really mind.  This has been going on since before my last post but I just thought I'd share it with you just because - because when I feel like sharing something, I share it.

Now that I've unloaded the last three weeks' timeline on you and assured you that this blog has not been abandoned, I wish my friends and blog readers a good weekend and hope to post again soon!

April 2, The Day of "Interestingness"

Yes, "interestingness."  I know it's not a real word so I guess I've added a word to my version of the English language!  Anyway, I use this word because it adequately describes today - interesting and eventful.

The day was started by helping a friend who lives in an apartment rearrange her storage unit in the building.  That went quickly and easily, and after that we went to the Gregg's restaurant for lunch.  Both this friend and my mom had a few things to get at Walmart, so we headed down the road to there after we had gotten through with our lunch.  Going to a grocery store on a weekend is a mistake - very few parking spaces available, lots of people...and those ride-on things at stores they give the handicapped, yeah, I almost got hit by one of those because the driver wasn't paying attention - but that's okay.

After we had finished our shopping, our friend was done checking out first so I went out to the car with her, helped her load up her groceries, and we waited in the car for my mom and sister.  I kept my door open just because I wanted to get out and help my mom and sister unload when they got out of the store.  Just after I had gotten into the car, when it was just the friend and me out there, the owner of the car next to ours starts it up - it took 2 tries, and then when it started up successfully, the shrillest shriek you could ever imagine comes from this car.  My door was open, so I shut it which blocked most of the noise.  The car lingered in its spot for a minute and then finally drove away.

As we were making our way out of the plaza, suddenly our right windshield wiper breaks, so we stop (in case you aren't in New England it was raining yesterday and more today).  All four of us emerged from the car and put the wiper inside, and I briefly looked for the clip that held it down around the car.  Found it under the hood.  Our friend did a makeshift "repair job" by using a plastic bag and an elastic band.  We made it home all right, but thankfully that happened in the plaza and not in the middle of the road.

We had Indian food for dinner tonight (yeah, we went out to eat last night, this afternoon and we had takeout this evening, so 3 meals from 3 different restaurants in less than 24 hours).  Now we're watching the movie Chicken Run, which is hilarious.  Tomorrow morning we have church, and after that who knows what the day will bring us?  Maybe a day like today?  Psalm 118:24 says, "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

HGTV Fixer Upper

This post is about one of my favorite shows of all time - HGTV Fixer Upper.  The owners of the show are the Christian couple Chip & Joanna Gaines, of Waco, Texas.  They are realtors but mainly what their show is about is the renovations of their clients' homes.  Whenever they get a client, a single or a couple, they have the clients come up with a budget - the budget includes the purchasing of the house as well as the renovation costs.  And as the clients are driving to the first home Chip & Joanna show, they exchange their ideas of what they want in the home - lots of land, big kitchen, etc.  Chip & Joanna show them three houses, and then the clients select the one they most wish for.  Sometimes the clients must try to get their chosen house for less than the asking price in order to still have room left in the budget for the renovations.  After the house has been purchased, Chip & Joanna begin renovations - both on the interior and exterior.  Some of the houses need just a few things done, while others need to be almost completely re-done.  A good portion of the renovations include things that the clients want, not necessarily things that absolutely need to be done - for example, Joanna likes to open up walls between living rooms and kitchens to make it feel more open; she also likes to install French doors in many places so that more natural light will flow into the house.  On this show, it seems that Joanna is the stylist and Chip is the "worker" - combining these two talents together make a great team.  As Joanna mentions a few times, she likes to do a little "side project" on each home.  She will recommend to the clients three options for this project, and they will choose the one they like the best.  Especially at this step in each episode, you will notice Joanna's Texas-talk, "y'all."  After everything is done, Chip & Joanna drive the clients to the home, forcing them not to look, to close their eyes.  Then they lead them out of their Suburban, and let them open their eyes to see two huge boards with a picture of the house before the renovations on those boards.  After Chip talks about what the house was before and what it is after, Joanna says the clients' first names, followed by, "Are you ready to see your fixer upper?"  The clients love Chip & Joanna's work.  After showing them the entire renovated place, Chip compares the value of the house before the renovation to the value after.  Each episode is closed with "Welcome home!"

If you are able to access Netflix through a Roku box, you can watch it without going onto cable or satellite.  Just search "Fixer Upper" and you should come up with it.  They show only 13 episodes on Netflix but you'll find more on HGTV - I believe they appear on TV every Tuesday night.  If you do decide to give this show a try if you haven't already, I hope you really enjoy it just like me!

The Mortification of March 11

So my mom and I went out to dinner at Applebee's last night.  My family tries to do this almost every month where my dad and my sister will go out somewhere and then the same night my mom and I will go out to a different place, but sometimes my dad and I go out somewhere and my mom and my sister go out somewhere.  When my dad and I go out and my mom and my sister go out we call that Guys' Night Girls' Night (I don't prefer that name!), and when my mom and I go out and my dad and my sister go out we call that Date Night (Goodness, we really could think up another name!).  Anyway, after that confusing ramble I'll just tell you that last night was Date Night.  It was a Friday night, of course and my mom and I were going to Gregg's at first - yeah we pulled right back out onto the road when the restaurant was packed to the doors!  So we went to Applebee's instead, and we had to wait about five minutes for a seat - which wasn't that bad.  As we were waiting this person walks into the kitchen and I say to my mom, "Mom, that person in the kitchen really looks like Dan!"  And she looked and said, "Because it is him, he does work here."  It just turns out that Dan is my cousin's fiance.  Very unfortunately he wasn't our waiter but he did have a spare moment so he stopped at our table to say hi.

So anyway, when we were finished with our meal and I had put my leftovers in a container that the waitress brought me (without me asking, by the way and she did the same thing with another glass of lemonade), I went to wash my hands before we left since I had been touching my shrimp which seemed to be a bit greasy.  So my mom said, "Do you know where the bathroom is?  If you look at where Dan's standing it's right behind him."  So I said, "Okay" and walked off.  So, after I had rounded the corner I thought I had walked far enough and that Dan had just moved or something.  No, because as soon as I went through that doorway I was smack-dab in the kitchen!  Thankfully someone was walking out at the time so I didn't more than a bit of a step inside.  This person says to me, "Oh hi, are you looking for the bathroom?  Well it's right up there to your right, just walk right up there."  Then I looked up there and Dan is still standing there, and he said, "Yeah, it's over here behind me."  I was a bit mortified, my future cousin directing me to the bathroom which a snail or a turtle could've found sooner than I did!  So I said, "Oh okay, thank you!" but was really feeling a bit silly.

That almost tops the other day when I was watching a show (I Love Lucy) and there was a quiz show on it and the song, My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean, Lucy sang there.  After the episode was over I saw the only song of that episode come up on the screen, so I exclaimed, "It's 'My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean?'  I always thought it was 'My Body Lies Over The Ocean!'"  So my mom and my sister, who were home at the time, got a good kick out of that and now my mom has given it this alias, 'The Song of the Ghost.'  Do you get it?

Anyway, I know if Dan is with the family for Easter in just over two weeks he'll tease me about it, "Oh hey, do you know where the bathroom is?"  Who knows?  He's also a magician, by the way - I don't know why I just said that now but whatever.  Anyway, that was 'The Mortification of March 11' and next time we go to Applebee's I'll be sure to watch more closely!
